What is a facet?
Porcelain veneer is a thin porcelain envelope that is glued to the front face of the tooth to improve its appearance. It is very strong once glued to your teeth. The facets are 1.5 mm thick translucent porcelain plates made in the laboratory after a tooth impression.
The main advantages of facets:
- Only a minimal substance is removed from the tooth.
- Facets can improve the color, shape and position of your teeth.
- Facets can also be used to fill the gaps of small, when orthodontics cannot be applied
- You can whiten your teeth, narrow spaces, and create a big smile.
- The facets transmit the light and therefore have a more translucent appearance that gives a natural and aesthetic look.
How are the facets prepared?
A facet usually takes two visits. Local anesthesia (injection) can be used to ensure that there is no discomfort.
Your first appointment usually involves taking an impression of the original teeth. This will be given to the dental technician, as well as other information needed to do the plating. The color of the neighboring teeth is matched to a shade to ensure that the plating will look quite natural.
On the next appointment the veneers are tried and, if they are successful, they are tied in place. To achieve a good result, we combine bleaching with porcelain veneers.
Faceted Solutions
A natural colored fill material can be used for minor repairs to the front teeth.
Your dentist suggests crowns for the teeth that need to be reinforced – either because they have broken, have been weakened by heavy filling, or have had root canal treatment.
After the facets
After the porcelain veneers are glued, minor adjustments can be made. It is usually suggested to wait 2-3 weeks to get used to the requested changes.
Your teeth may have some sensitivity for a few days after assembly.
Facets should last for many years. But like your own teeth they can chip or break. Your dentist can tell you how long each plating should last. Small cracks can be repaired.
Cleaning your facets
Use whitening toothpaste to cleanse your facets. You cannot change the colors of facets, but whitening toothpaste can prevent plaque from forming on the facets.
Use the brush, dental floss and flush as you would to your natural teeth. Keep your dental facets in good condition to prevent cavities, gum disease and tooth color change behind the veneers.
The edge of the teeth where the veneer joins the natural tooth is very susceptible to damage because the food particles and the plate now have a small crest to sit on. Your dentist will demonstrate the proper technique for flossing.
You must take care of your gums because if they pull out you will see the edge of the facet index.
